Memory Lane

Kids always ask me about favorite books from my childhood when I visit schools. For two reasons -- I read so many books as a kid and my adult memory is so bad -- I can never really give an answer. Then, last night, my heart skipped a beat when I saw this at Secret Garden Bookshop:
I had completely forgotten all about these books, which I devoured when I was young. What was not to like? These three triplets were always sweet, always dressed adorably and they got to go on adventures (albeit, small ones) all by themselves. I also adored the companion books about three boys named Snip, Snap and Snurr.

When I read the lines, "Flicka, Ricka and Dicka were three little girls who lived in Sweden long ago,", I was instantly taken back to the linoleum floor of our drafty, old house on James Street (where we used to stand in the front yard and make tugging motions in the air so the logging truck drivers going down James would blare their air horns), me on my tummy in front of the oil heater trying to get warm and reading about three Swedish sweethearts.

Sigh. Of course, I had to buy the book and I'm taking it with me tomorrow when I go to visit my parents because I know my mom will remember Flicka, Ricka and Dicka and get the same big kick I did out of finding these precious reprints.

Is there a Flicka, Ricka and Dicka book in your past? What cover would send you on an instant trip down memory lane? Share!

  1. The Pink Motel by Carol Ryrie Brink. And guess what? The main character is a boy named KIRBY!!! I had actually forgotten that until I pulled the book off my shelf just now. Ha!

  2. I used to LOVE Timmy Mouse by Miriam Clark Potter. My mother read that book so much to me and then later to her grandchildren that the book fell apart. I liked the illustrations. I liked the rhyming words and repetition, too... And I always love happy endings.
"How fortunate that you didn't give the baby away!" said Mrs. Mouse. "You found us just in time." :-)

  3. Carrie, I didn't know that book; added it to my "find" list.

Barbara -- now I know where you got your misguided opinion that Kirby is a boy's name. . on second thought, maybe that's where my grandma got the idea to use the name. For her first boy. But she had 4 girls, so I got the name!
