I spent the entire afternoon researching a la Von Braun -- not knowing what I was doing but being profoundly moved by what I found.
Have you ever done photo research at the Library of Congress site? It took me a box of Kleenex to get through their WPA photos. Go to this site and search for "children."

I immediately stopped feeling sorry for myself and my temporarily bum left hand.

Those are moving pictures, Kirby, and thanks for the link that I can probably use in my own research. I understand the Kleenex:)
ReplyDeleteFor my own research about a year ago, I watched Ken Burns's "The War." Crying ensued, let me tell you. The 1930s and early 40s were just such an emotional time in our history, especially when viewed from the other side of time, but that's what makes them wonderful times for stories. I wish there was a way around that, but I haven't found one yet.

ReplyDeleteI only looked at a couple of the pictures... partly, due to time constraints and partly due to "fear" of what I would find. The first one was a photo of children in an English bomb shelter. Their eyes said a lot. I can't quite wrap my head around the whole idea... The 2nd, I chose because it sounded more pleasant. It was titled "Children playing in the yard." It wasn't as pleasant as I imagined it was going to be...
I'm not sure what you're writing, but based on your research, I imagine it's going to really stir the emotions.
I'm looking forward to reading it when it's finished.
