Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith
I was reluctant to turn that last page last night. Sigh. What a heart-warming, charming and engaging book. Who would've thought that Charles Darwin was so head-over-heels about his wife? And vice versa? It's kind of mind-boggling to think that no one has thought to tell this endearing love story before. But perhaps it's a good thing because I'm not sure anyone other than Deborah Heiligman could have done it justice.
Study the opening of this book for how to write a good hook. Imagine: Charles Darwin making a list of pros and cons about whether or not to marry. One of the cons: a wife would be better than a dog!
It is clear that despite their profound philosophical differences, Charles and Emma loved each other. Reading of how they supported one another made me resolve to be kinder and more thoughtful to my own husband.
I loved, too, this more personal insight into someone I've rarely thought of in human terms, as his contributions have seemed so large.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. My only complaint: my time with the Darwins in this story was too short!
