Rosy Ruminations

Yes, Virginia, there was a flower here yesterday.

This Nootka rose bush taught me two lessons this week. First, to take a photo of the last remaining bloom before it falls off the bush ("never put off until tomorrow. . ."), especially when I plan to write a blog post about it.

Can you see the rosehip?

The other lesson had to do with the fact that the bush was loaded with fat, juicy rosehips, an indication that the plant was blossomed out, readying itself for dormancy, for winter. And yet one perfect pink bloom (you'll have to take my word for it!) dared to have one last, late August fling.

I was heartened by that. It said to me that it's never too late to do something new, try something out of the box. Miracles can happen. A rose can bloom on a spent bush. A story can flourish even when a writer feels dormant.

Keep your eyes open for the unexpected!

  1. Is that what rosehips mean? I've noticed them on my rosebush as well.

  2. Yep; and they are supposedly loaded with Vitamin C and teas are made from them but I don't think this is a do-it-yourself project.;-)
