Deep in the Heart of Texas

Well, pardners, come tomorrow morning, I'll be mounting up to hit the trail for Texas and I can't wait. I'll be keynoting at the Austin SCBWI conference, Destination: Publication. Those conference planners should definitely buy some lottery tickets -- they started out with a Caldecott Honor (Marla Frazee) and Newbery Honor (moi) and ended up with a whole passel of award winners, thanks to the ALA announcements last week. Jacqueline Kelly (The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, 2010 Newbery Honor), and Chris Barton (The Day-Glo Brothers, 2010 Sibert Honor) as well as two-time honoree, the inimitable Ms. Frazee, (2010 Caldecott Honor for All the World) AND Liz Garton Scanlon (author of All the World) were long ago booked as presenters for this Saturday's conference! Wow!

In addition to being able to rub shoulders with the above-mentioned star-studded cast -- and some stars not mentioned here -- I'm looking forward to taking a few days afterward to explore Austin and the hill country. I'm traveling with Neil so there will be the requisite visit to the state capitol for the requisite photo of him on the steps of the building (ask our kids how much they love this tradition). We intend to consume some barbecue (at the Salt Lick), commune with LBJ's ghost at his library/museum, listen to some live music, do some browsing in Gruene and New Braunfels and I might even buy some cowboy boots. I've got a hankering for some red ones.

More later, y'all.
