I have been deep in The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, by Alan Bradley , recommended by Nancy Pearl. Flavia, the 11-year-old heroine, is mad about Chemistry, a word, of course, that comes from an ancient art. Which put me in mind of a book by Karen Cushman (due out in April) that I am eagerly awaiting.
